Do I need constant current or constant voltage LED driver?

2023-11-14

To determine whether you need a constant current or constant voltage LED driver, you need to consider the LED lighting application and the type of LED lights.

Constant voltage (CV) LED drivers are suitable for powering LED lights that operate in parallel because the voltage across each of the LED lights connected in parallel remains constant. In contrast, the current drawn by each LED light varies based on the number of LED lights connected in the circuit. Examples of LED lights that operate at a constant voltage include LED strips, panels, and modules.

On the other hand, constant current (CC) LED drivers are suitable for powering LED lights that operate in series, where each LED is connected one after another. In this configuration, the same current flows through each LED light, and hence, the brightness of each LED light remains the same. Examples of LED lights that operate at a constant current include high-power LED lights, such as those used in outdoor lighting, stadium lighting, and industrial lighting.

In general, if you are using low-power LED lights such as LED strips and modules, a constant voltage driver will be required. In contrast, if you are using high-power LED lights that operate at constant current, then a constant current driver will be required.

When you choose an LED driver, be sure to check the specifications provided by the manufacturer to confirm that the driver is compatible with the LED lights that you plan to install. Some LED drivers, such as some that feature both constant voltage and constant current, can work with a wide range of LED lights.
